GIVE
A PHONE/SAVE A LIFE
You can help save the life of a victim of domestic violence
by simply donating your old cell phone.
Give
a Phone/Save a Life. Victims of domestic violence are quite often cut
off from the community and trapped in situations where their home phones have
been cut off and they have no means of calling for help when their life is being
threatened by an abuser. The Victim Advocates for the Monroe County Sheriff’s
Office has a program where donated cell phones, programmed to work free when 911
is dialed, are provided to victims of domestic violence so that they can always
have a life line to emergency help. DOLPHINS, working with local Monroe County
businesses and organizations in the Upper Keys, is sponsoring a drive to collect
donated cell phones. Donated cell phones are provided to the Monroe County
Sheriff’s Office for use by victims in Monroe County. Excess donated phones
beyond the current needs of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office are purchased
by Shelter Alliance for use in domestic violence programs in other areas. All
monies received by DOPHINS for the purchase of the surplus phones that are
donated in Monroe County are programmed exclusively for domestic violence
programs in Monroe County

DOPLHINS to Stop Domestic Violence, Inc. is a non-profit
organization started in the Upper Keys designed to train community secular and
religious leaders in the need for treating domestic violence as a community
systemic problem. DOLPHINS is developing networks to foster a community spirit
that will encourage everyone to break the silence and help people realize it is
ok to talk about domestic violence. DOLPHINS provides simple ways, such as
donating a used cell phone, where the average neighbor can reach out to the
community of victims and say “we care” and want to help you. This is also
exemplified by the following Upper Keys neighbors that have already donated
materials and labor toward the construction of the Purple donation bins; Island
Art and Furniture Works, Key Largo; KLI Home Center, Key Largo; Rock Harbor
Paint and Wallpaper, Key Largo; Rod Cook, private carpenter and furniture
craftsman, Key Largo.
